Nickelodeon (often shortened to Nick) is a television network that was launched April 1st, 1979, making it the 1st cable network for children. It's demographic is aimed towards kids and teenagers aged 2-17. Nickelodeon programming mainly consisted of original animated shows (known as Nicktoons), live-action shows, and gaming shows. Nickelodeon consists of three blocks: Nick Jr. standard Nick, and Nick-at-Nite.
While the network did launch on April fool's day, Nickelodeon was tested on December 1st, 1977 with Warner-Amex being the owner during that time. Nickelodeon was referred to as "Pinwheel" at that time also. In 1986, Warner-Amex sold Nickelodeon along with the sister channels MTV and VH1 to Viacom.
History
The beginning of Nickelodeon was through an interactive television company known as QUBE, which was located in Columbus, Ohio in 1977. It was known as C-3. The network was concurrently named Pinwheel. Its current name appeared in 1979 and the network was eventually purchased by Viacom (now named Paramount Global) in 1985 (along with VH1, MTV and The Movie Channel). In 1988, the network started Nick Jr. to have a lineup of preschool television programming. Throughout the 1990s, many changes were occurring with the network, which include:
- It started introducing animated series (specifically in 1991) and eventually became a competitor to Cartoon Network and later Disney Channel (specifically during the late 1990s and early 2000s).
- The network also started releasing theatrical films with the introduction of the Nickelodeon Movies production company, which was originally intended to have distribution by 20th Century Fox, but distribution was rerouted to Paramount Pictures (after that film studio was purchased by Viacom in 1994), which also meant that home video releases of series from the network were handled by Paramount Home Entertainment (starting in 1996).
- Most live action programming was produced at Universal Orlando Resort (starting in 1990 and ending in 2005).
- It also launched Nickelodeon Magazine
- Various video games were produced by Viacom New Media (which included characters from their series) such as Nickelodeon 3D Movie Maker and others.
