The CW is a broadcast television network that launched in 2006 as a replacement for UPN and The WB (both launched in 1995). As their replacement, programming from both was carried over to the new network. It is co-owned between ViacomCBS (formerly CBS Corporation) and Warner Bros. Entertainment (purchased by AT&T in 2018 through their acquisition of WarnerMedia). They provide content for streaming services through the production company / online service CW Seed. The CW Plus is a group of affiliates that operate in cities with lower populations, a concept that was recycled from its predecessor The WB 100+ Station Group.
In October 2022, Paramount and Warner Bros. Discovery's ownership of the network was decreased to 12.5% from their original 50% ownership after the purchase of the network by Nexstar Media Group was completed.
Its sometimes referred to as The CW Network even though it’s shortened to The CW or CW which pays reference to the network’s original owners from 2006 to 2022. With the purchase by Nexstar, the abbreviation of CWN can refer to either The CWNetwork or CBS Warner Nexstar1
Note:1This is mainly an observation regarding the network’s original naming convention of including the first letter of each owner. This doesn’t mean that the network name will be changed to "The CWN" to accommodate the new ownership from Nexstar anytime soon.
On the Warner side of network ownership, it comes back full circle since the Nexstar purchase reunites the network with its predecessor on the Warner side, The WB, originating from the 2019 purchase of part-owner, Tribune Broadcasting.
