Rufus used to be a ordinary dog until he found a magical necklace in the river. When Manny Garcia wished he has a best friend, Rufus magically turned into a human boy the next morning. He enrolled in Manny's new school and he becomes popular with everyone leaving Manny out of the crowd. But Rufus was helping Manny by saying good things about him and ended up becoming homecoming king with Paige Prescott as his queen. Rufus, however was kidnapped by bad guys, and in the end, he damaged his necklace to save his friends. He went back to being a dog and Manny and Paige were happy with it since now they are a couple. One year later, Rufus ended up turning back into a boy and can change into a human/dog depending how he feels. Then one day, he meets Kat, a new girl in school who is secretly a cat because she has a magical necklace just like Rufus. He fell in love with her, but he doesn't know how to act like a good date. So Manny and Paige helped him out, but they soon found out that Kat was using Rufus to get closer to him to take back the necklace that belonged to her family. In the end, she sees the errors of her ways and decides she loves Rufus, so just like Manny and Paige, Rufus and Kat became a couple, too.
