Ray Donovan is an American crime drama television franchise created by Ann Biderman for the Paramount Premium Network Group. The franchise' tv show adaption of the same name premiered on June 30th, 2013, on the Showtime channel. A 120-minute tv special "Ray Donovan: Staten Island" originally premiered online before it was shown on the Showtime Network.

The premise of the show's tv pilot started in Massachusetts, following his release from prison, Irish gangster Mickey Donovan is driven to a church and murders a priest. In California, Mickey's son Ray works as a fixer for the high-powered Los Angeles law firm of Goldman & Drexler. Ray and his associate Avi are summoned to a hotel room, where Deonte Frasier has woken up next to a dead girl after a night of partying. Ray's employer, Lee Drexler, sends him to rectify a situation involving Tommy Wheeler, a young movie star and closeted homosexual who is rumored to have picked up a transvestite hooker. Ray decides to merge the two cases and replace Deonte with Tommy, clearing Deonte of any involvement with the dead girl and drawing attention away from the rumors about Tommy. With Lena acting as Tommy's publicist, the swap is successful, and Tommy is taken to rehab to complete the ruse.

After finishing the show's very first episode & tv pilot The Bag or the Bat (Ray Donovan), The franchise' American crime drama television adaption was created by Ann Biderman, which premiered on Showtime on June 30, 2013.[2] Liev Schreiber stars as the titular character, a "fixer" for the powerful law firm Goldman & Drexler, representing the rich and famous of Los Angeles, California. Ray experiences his own problems when his father, Mickey Donovan (Jon Voight), is unexpectedly released from prison.

On February 4, 2020, Showtime cancelled the series after seven seasons.[3] However, on February 24, 2021, the network announced a feature-length film to conclude the storyline, set to premiere in 2022.[4]

On October 19, 2018, the 120-minute tv special called "Ray Donovan: Staten Island" originally premiered online before it was shown on the Showtime Network. The plot of the show's tv special started when Ray is pulled from the East River by police officer Sean “Mac” McGrath and taken over the bridge to Staten Island. After Ray gets a call from Anita Novak (who says she has killed someone), Anita Novak has shot and killed the man who hit her, and Sam asks Ray to deal with it. the tv special itself was directed by Allen Coulter and written by David Hollander.

Television film

On February 24, 2021, Showtime announced a feature-length film to conclude the storyline, to premiere in 2022, with David Hollander directing it and co-writing with Schreiber.[4] The network brought them the idea of a film after fans' outrage. The two-hour format gave them an ability "to work in very cinematic language".[5] Beside the original cast returning, Chris Petrovski, AJ Michalka, David Patrick Kelly and Chris Gray had joined the film.[6][7][8][9]

On November 22, the official trailer and poster for the film, titled Ray Donovan: The Movie were released, with a premiere date of January 14, 2022 and tagline "You can't outrun your legacy".[10]
